Garden windows are small box windows that stick out about a foot from the wall, most often over the kitchen sink. Glass on the front, both sides and a sloped top lets sun reach the shelf from every direction, so herbs grow a step from the cutting board and the sink gets far more daylight than a flat window gives.
On many models the front and top are fixed and the side panels open for air. In Miami-Dade and Broward, which sit in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, every window needs a product approval for that zone, glass top included. When an approved impact garden window fits your opening, its laminated glass means the box never needs a shutter. We confirm the exact product and its approval at your estimate.
Fewer sizes are made in impact glass than for standard windows. We measure your opening, confirm a unit with the right approval and show you the choices at your free estimate.

Most homes get one garden window and standard impact windows everywhere else. Try single hung, sliding, casement and picture windows in five ES frame colors on our before and after visualizer. At your estimate we show you garden window finishes that go with the look you pick.
A garden window is not the only way to brighten a kitchen. Here is how the three most common sink-wall windows compare.

Garden windows are protruding, box-like windows that give indoor plants, herbs and flowers a sunny place to grow. Guardian Impact Windows & Roofing installs garden windows in homes across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, most often as a kitchen garden window over the sink, where a little extra light and a shelf for basil make a daily difference.
Because the box projects outward, a garden window adds shelf space and depth without taking up any room inside. Glass on the front, sides and top opens up the view and brings in natural light, so you may not need the kitchen lights on during the day.
Miami-Dade and Broward counties are in Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, which has the strictest product-approval and installation rules in the state. Every window installed there, including a garden window and its glass top, needs a product approval for that zone. Palm Beach County sits outside the HVHZ, but Florida's wind-borne debris rules still call for impact glass or approved shutters on most homes there.
A garden window bought off the shelf may not carry an approval for the HVHZ, so check before you buy. An impact garden window uses laminated glass that stays in the frame when it breaks, which keeps the opening closed in a storm and means no shutter to fit around a box. If you are working toward wind-mitigation credit on your insurance, remember that opening protection is judged on every opening in the house, so the garden window should be impact-rated like the rest.
Garden window replacement starts with a free in-home estimate. We measure the opening, look at the wall outside for anything in the way and help you choose size, venting, glass and frame finish. A custom garden window is ordered to fit your opening, so there is no guessing on size.
Guardian pulls the permit, our own crew handles the garden window installation, and we schedule the city inspection to close out the permit. We are a Certified General Contractor (CGC1524314), local, licensed and insured, with more than 15 years of experience. Call 786-654-8273 or use the form above to book your free estimate.
It depends on the size, the glass, whether the sides open and how much work the opening needs. Impact glass costs more than standard glass. We measure at a free in-home estimate and give you a written price, and financing is available.
Some manufacturers make impact garden windows with laminated glass in the front, sides and top, but there are fewer models and sizes than for standard windows, and the unit must carry a product approval for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone to pass permit in Miami-Dade or Broward. We check what is approved for your opening and confirm it before you sign. If no approved garden unit fits, we will show you a flat impact window for the same spot.
Many do. The front and top are usually fixed, and the side panels on many models open outward for air, with a screen on the inside. Fully fixed models give the most glass and the simplest seal.
Usually, yes. A garden window installs in a regular window opening, so most kitchen windows over a sink can be swapped. We check outside first: the box sticks out about a foot, so a walkway, A/C unit, gas line or narrow side yard can change the plan.
Yes. Window replacement is permitted work in South Florida. Guardian pulls the permit, installs the window and schedules the city inspection to close it out.
A garden window is a small box, usually over a sink, with a glass top and shelves for plants. A bay window is larger, angles out in three sections and usually has a solid roof with a deep sill or seat inside. See our bay windows page.
It can, because the glass top faces the sky. Low-E glass is worth asking about, since it cuts heat and UV. We look at which way the wall faces before we recommend a unit, and a fixed top keeps the seal simple.
